The card tells us the
Albert Herbert Robert Barnes was a private in the 24th Battalion, London Regiment with the service
numbers of 3410 and 721131. The four digit number indicates that
the 24th Battalion was of the Territorial Force. He qualified for the
Victory Medal and the
British Medal but not the
14 Star or 14/15 Star. This
would indicate that he didn't enter service until 1916 at the earliest -
he would have been eighteen in the January of 1916. The absence of the date and theatre of war first served in
denotes first operational service in France from 1916. The 24th London
Regiment served in Salonika and Palestine before returning to France
where he was killed on the Somme in the September of 1918 |
