Welcome to the Barnes Family Web Site:

This month, we remember those that served and those that gave their lives in the Great War. Members of the Barnes family volunteered for the Colours and served in France, Flanders, India, Palestine, Iraq and Salonika. William Edward Barnes was wounded on the Somme in 1916, Charles George Thomas Barnes was invalided out in 1919 - both were awarded the Silver War Badge. Ernest John Barnes served in France and Salonika, where he contracted malaria. He was demobbed in the May of 1919.

Herbert Robert Albert Barnes enlisted in 1916 and served in France, Salonika and Palestine before returning to France late 1918. He was killed on the 18th September in the Battle of Epehy Wood. Robert Harry Barnes was killed on the Somme on the 27th February 1917, he has no known grave - his name is inscribed on the Theipval Memorial.

The Gosling family, eight brothers that served in the Army and Royal Navy, one of whom; Arthur Ennis Gosling was killed on the Western Front on the 5th October 1918. He was twenty-three years old. He is buried in the Busigny Communal Cemetery.

Picture of the Day
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from falling hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
